By their fifth album, some bands hit creative gold; some hit the autopilot button.
With SODA, Sydney five piece The Rubens have made their best record to date. They define and refine their sound while remaining increasingly experimental. They push musical boundaries without losing what makes them special.
Within the inviting world of SODA you’ll find love songs to drug dealers. Guitars that sound like synths. Vocals that sound like robots. Pop songs that are subversive but still seductive.
It’s the kind of record only a band of brothers (three sharing actual DNA; all sharing a deep bond stretching back nearly 15 years) could conjure. All from the home studio they set up in an WWII bunker – letting them bring ideas to life at their own pace.
The Rubens have become a solid unit, mates who have grown up together, influenced each other musically and been inspired by touring Australia and beyond. When they’re not writing songs together in the Bunker, they’re messaging each other song fragments in a group chat for future collaboration.
