Raised in Central Coast’s Terrigal, BOY SODA found an overflowing creative community in Sydney, saying, “I think I definitely need to be seen on a creative level and in the spiritual level by the people that are in my life, and I found those people in Sydney,” After a standout performance at Australia’s inaugural SXSW in 2023, which saw BOY SODA realise, “that I can arrange a different band each time to suit the space that it’s in,” his aptness for instrumental arrangement has thrown him ahead of the curve sonically and in his own words.
Since the start of his career in 2019, and the release of his debut 2022 mixtape YC-TAPE: Vol. 1 and EP The Distance Between Thinking and Feeling — BOY SODA has become a fore-figure in the new wave of world-class Soul and R&B from Australian shores. Atop his soul-inspired sonics he explores the intricacies of love, identity in his Samoan heritage and his ideas on masculinity and femininity and what it means to straddle the line between the two.
Primed early by his parents music that ventured from Nora Jones, to John Mayer, to Prince, to Stevie Wonder and the MoTown Scene, BOY SODA has spent the last few years building out a new age soul portfolio that’s been lauded by the likes of international publications VICE, Notion, REVAMP, Hunger and Wonderland and in 2023 was named as One to Watch by both Rolling Stone and Live Nation. Parallel to that, the performance leg of his career began on a high in 2019 when he opened for Dominic Fike at Camp Flog Gnaw closely followed by performances for luxury brands like Hermes, and on Triple J’s Bars of Steel where he delivered a stripped back and balletic show of his soulful discography. Fittingly, his track ‘BIG’ was also included in the globally successful reboot of Heartbreak High. 2024 saw BOY SODA by creating a space for insightful and intimate conversations with local Australian talent in his Soda Sessions as part of the Converse All-Star program.
In 2025, BOY SODA’s eyes are set on the rollout of his debut album which promises to be a major re-set in his practice, and is, “the most quintessentially me thing I can make.”
